Hubbard Glacier

We got to sleep in today and it was GREAT!! The ship was doing some rocking and rolling during the night and supposedly went through a lot of fog. Around 3 am this morning the ship sounded the horn multiple times to warn smaller boats that may be around that we were coming. It woke up my mom and grandmother, but I had no problem sleeping through it!!

We went to an Indonesian luncheon to celebrate the workers on the ship - they provided authentic Indonesian food and it was amazing!!

After lunch we came upon Hubbard Glacier. It was amazing, beautiful and FREEZING!! I was wearing my heavy jacket and gloves and was still cold (although, in my defense, I was out on my bow of the ship, it was very windy and I was there for almost 3 hours!!!). I know that I'm going to be missing this weather when I get back to Arkansas!!

The terminus of Hubbard Glacier is 7 miles long and over 350 feet high out of the water (and another 250 feet under water!!). It advances 50 ft per day and calves (part of the ice falls off into the water) hundreds of times per day.

The last island to the right, Hankey Island, is 2 miles in front of the glacier!! It looks like it is right on top of it ... Perspective is everything!!

A picture of the ice calving off the face of the ice terminus .. Very loud!!!

Serving pea soup on the bow of the ship.

Park ranger who boarded the ship as we got closer to Hubbard Glacier and narrated for us .. A wealth of information!!

After standing outside for 4 hours we decided to go in for some hot chocolate and hot tea ... It took me like 3 hours to warm up!!

We decided that nothing on the dinner menu sounded too appealing tonight, so we decided to go up to Lido for dinner .. And lo and behold - the Lido deck was serving the same exact food .. Go figure. We grabbed the last of the pizza in the "kids corner" (terrible, I know) and had desserts .. Because that is just what you do on a cruise, right?!?!?

After dinner I went up to the crows nest to play trivia .. Yet again, no winning ... Oh well, we have fun and lear a lot.

Once trivia was over, I met back up with my mom & grandmother for the show in the Queen's lounge. Today's special guest was Elliot Maxx - a hilarious story teller with funny song accompaniment! He was great and had all 3 of us rolling on the floor!

After the show, we went to the piano bar for 'Name That Tune' .. I have decided that I need to listen to a wider range of music!!! Different radio stations may be in my near future!!

As for right this very moment, I'm still in the piano bar listening to Diane play and sing .. The Indonesian crew members are putting on a show at 11 pm (in about 3 minutes) and I plan on going to that before heading to bed

Tomorrow we will be in Sitka, Alaska (Sitka = Little Russia) and it should be good. Hopefully I'll find some wifi there to post all these!!

Chocolate Galore

Tonight they had the dessert/chocolate extravaganza! Talk about chocolate over load - sugar coma! They had beautiful cakes made from all kinds of chocolate, bread braided into the shapes of various animals and topped it all off with ice sculptures.

Sculptures made from ... I have no idea ... :)

White chocolate fountain (they also had a dark chocolate fountain)!

Watermelon art

The biggest pie I have ever seen - over 2 feet in diameter!!!!

Sea dragon cake

Expresso cake .. Very yummy

Extravagant cakes

Assorted sweet treats

Vegetable floral arrangements

Braided bread creatures - they're carbohydrate free, I swear!!

Ice sculptures

The food was amazing to look at and I did nibble a bit ... The downfall of the dessert extravaganza was that it didn't start until 10:30 pm ... A little late to get a sugar high!! I am, however, happy I went up there to experience the hoopla!
