Kodiak, Alaska - Bear town USA

Well we made it to Kodiak ... After a very rough night at sea. Once we left Homer yesterday evening, the winds started picking up and really got the ship rocking - listing to the right and left as well as going up and down through the peaks and troughs. I only woke up a few times during the night because I heard things falling on the floor - but my mom and grandmother had a difficult time sleeping through all the rocking.

The water was much calmer when we finally made it into Kodiak, and it turned out to be a fantastic weather day - complete with sunshine and blue sky!!

Sunrise in Kodiak, Alaska!!

There were a ton of crab pots on shore - just waiting to greet our arrival.

We didn't have any excursions planned (there just isn't much to do or see in Kodiak), so we got a cab to take us around. He took us to the top of the island, to Fort Abercrombie, past the Russian Orthodox Church and into downtown Kodiak (which is only 2-3 blocks long!).

View of Kodiak's airport from the top of the island.

GE wind turbines ... They were very quiet!

The Russian Church.

Old and broken bells laying on the ground next to the Russian Church.

Moss hanging from the trees around Fort Abercrombie.

A guy climbing the crab pots, preparing them to go out to sea.

A ship headed out to sea.

There wasn't very much to see or do in Kodiak, so by lunch time we were ready to head back to the ship. Today is a short day out and about - we had to be back on ship by 2:30. I heard through the grapevine that the Cornelia Marie (from the Deadliest Catch) was in port today, but I didn't get to see it :(.

Tonight was a formal dinner - shrimp, pumpkin soup and Alaskan king crab cakes ... my absolute favorite meal so far!!

We went to the show 'Avalon' presented by the Amsterdam singers & dancers - it was pretty good!! At the moment we're all sitting in the piano bar listening to Diane play the piano and sing ... it's 9:30 and still daylight outside (pretty crazy)!

Tonight is the dessert/chocolate extravaganza .. That will be a whole other blog post!!!
